My Wellness Journey: From Insecurity to Inner Strength

In 2016, while I was still in university, I was often told I was beautiful, but there was always a condition attached: “beautiful and fat.”

I weighed around 75kg at the time. I smiled through those comments, but deep down, those words planted seeds of doubt. Slowly, I started believing that maybe I needed to change my body before I could truly feel beautiful.

Eventually, I turned to the keto diet. I was determined to lose weight and, in some way, lose the insecurity that came with it. And it worked. I dropped from around 75kg to 59kg.

But something unexpected happened.

The approval I thought I would find never came.

Instead, I was told I was “too thin,” that I looked “sick,” and that I was “no longer beautiful.” Once again, I felt like my body was being measured against someone else’s expectations.

It seemed like no matter what size I was, it was never enough.

So I started eating junk food again, not because my body needed it, but because I wanted to gain weight and feel accepted.

Looking back, I realize that my fitness journey at that point wasn’t really about my health.

It was about people pleasing.

A Loss That Changed My Mindset

In 2018, I lost my beloved aunt to cancer at just 38 years old.

That loss changed something in me.

It made me think deeply about life, health, and how quickly everything can change. I became more aware of my body. Every unusual feeling, every discomfort, every change made me wonder if something was wrong.

Then, during one hospital visit, I received news that gave me a completely different perspective.

After tests and discussions with my doctors, I was diagnosed with hormonal imbalance and PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome)

The diagnosis was overwhelming, but it was also eye opening.

Suddenly, some of the things I had been experiencing started to make more sense: • The mood swings • The cravings • The fatigue

I began to understand that my body wasn’t simply failing me. It was communicating with me.

And I needed to start listening.

That realization changed the way I thought about fitness and wellness. I no longer wanted another quick fix or another restrictive diet. I wanted to build habits that would actually support my health and help me feel stronger from the inside out.

A New Approach to Wellness

I started small.

• I began walking in the mornings and sometimes in the evenings. • I added jump rope and light strength exercises. • I focused on balanced eating instead of restricting myself. • I paid more attention to rest, hydration, and being kinder to myself.

And slowly, I began to notice changes: • My cravings reduced. • My energy improved. • My mood swings became less intense. • My relationship with my body began to change.

It wasn’t a miracle that happened overnight. There was no perfect transformation.

There were good days and difficult days.

But there was progress.

Real progress.

For the first time, I wasn’t chasing thinness.

I was rebuilding my health.

Your Body, Your Pace

Living with PCOS taught me something I wish I had understood much earlier.

Fitness isn’t just about what happens to your body.

It is also about your emotions, your mindset, your habits, and the relationship you have with yourself.

Your body is not something you need to punish into becoming a certain shape.

Your body is something you need to understand, care for, and support.

I know what it feels like to look in the mirror and wonder if you’re enough.

I know what it feels like to change your body because of someone else’s opinion.

And I know what it feels like to keep chasing a version of yourself that you think will finally earn you acceptance.

But you don’t have to live that way.

If you’re navigating your own struggles with your body, your health, or your confidence, please remember this: • Your pace is valid. • Your story is enough. • Your journey matters.

You don’t have to become someone else to deserve love, confidence, or joy.

Choose movement because you want to feel stronger. Choose nourishing food because you want to take care of yourself. Choose rest because your body deserves it. Choose yourself because you are worth choosing.
